SPREADING KINDNESS #3 – Kindness in a Coffee Shop

Kindness is inspiring!!

Today, I was tutoring a student at a coffee shop and we noticed that people in the drive-through were paying for the car behind them.

When a car behind a car had a particularly big order, the folks in the front car paid half of it and I paid the other half.

The student said that he worked a lot and then paid for someone’s order in one of the cars. He inspired me and I took out a gift card I had for the coffee shop and told the baristas to use it up to help keep the kindness going. And they did 🙂

Now I have a smile on my face that won’t go away and a warm feeling in my heart! Kindness is inspiring so pass it on!

How about setting the goal of spreading kindness once every day? You got all kinds of ways you can do it!

As a lifelong learner, I’m always in search of more information. With that in mind, here are some terrific resources for ways to spread kindness:

SPREADING KINDNESS #2 – The Benefits of Spreading Kindness

In an article titled The Importance of Kindness, Dr. Karyn Hall defines kindness as “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” but why is kindness so important? For example as the article states, research has shown that kindness is the most important predictor of satisfaction and stability in a marriage. However, many more benefits exist to spreading kindness.

According to randomactsofkindness.org, spreading kindness produces increases and decreases in our lives. Increases include in amounts of The Love Hormone (oxytocin), Energy, Happiness, Lifespan, Pleasure and Serotonin. On the other hand, decreases are seen in levels of Pain, Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Blood Pressure.

One of the results of the pandemic is that I have become more focused on spreading kindness. Let me share some examples of how I spread kindness:

  • I have started writing cards and letters for the first time in a very long time.
  • I give compliments to as many people as I can each day whether I know them or not.
  • I make a point of thanking customer service workers before I even ask for their help. I know that they’ve been the brunt of much frustration when they’re doing the best they can.

Let me share one more idea with you in the form of this quote from Dr. Hall’s article: “Kindness includes being kind to yourself. Do you treat yourself kindly? Do you speak gently and kindly to yourself and take good care of yourself?” So, how kind are you to yourself?

SPREADING KINDNESS #1 – Look What These Neighbors Did For the Sake of a Two Year-Old Girl

Connecting with a child can be challenging and even more so when the child is facing his/her own challenge. Such is the case for 2 year-old Samantha. However, those in her Newton, Massachusetts neighborhood didn’t see a hurdle but rather an opportunity.

Here’s a video telling this very sweet story of Spreading Kindness: https://youtu.be/kSCjdyFqq28
